Frequently Asked Questions
Each 5g single-serve pack can be infused multiple times using small brewing tools like teapot and gaiwan, with the exact number depending on the tea type and quality. Here’s a quick guide:
- Green Tea: 3-4 times
- Black Tea: 4-5 times
- White Tea: 4-5 times
- Oolong Tea: 4-6 times
For a western brewing methodology, the teas can also go for 2-3 times pending on personal flavor.
When it comes to caffeine content, black tea generally leads the pack, followed by green tea and white tea. Oolong tea typically has a lower caffeine level due to its larger leaves. However, these values can vary, and there are no strict standards regarding caffeine levels in tea.
Caffeine Content in Tea vs. Coffee:
- Generally, tea contains about 10-60 mg of caffeine per cup (8 oz), with caffeine accounting for 1-5% of the weight of the tea leaves.
- Same cup of brewed coffee contains approximately 95–200 mg of caffeine, depending on the brewing method and coffee type.
- Thus, coffee contains much higher caffeine level than tea
Factors that influence caffeine extraction include the amount of tea leaves, water temperature, brewing time, and the number of infusions.
For the best results, tea master Lu Yu recommended water from a clean, swiftly moving mountain stream. While that’s not always practical, filtered water, spring water, or distilled water will work well. Avoid tap water, as it may alter the tea's delicate flavors.
The scenting process is a traditional technique used to naturally infuse tea leaves with the fragrance and flavor of flowers or fruits. In this method, fresh flowers such as jasmine, osmanthus, or rose, or aromatic fruits are layered with tea leaves, allowing the tea to absorb the natural aroma. This process may be repeated multiple times to achieve the desired intensity of fragrance.
After scenting, high-quality teas often have the flowers or fruit removed to keep the taste pure, leaving behind only the essence and subtle flavor. This method, which involves no artificial additives, results in a delicately flavored tea that highlights both the tea’s original character and the added floral or fruity notes.
